Clothing is essential because, you can encounter all four seasons in one day during some adventures. Gear is another important thing to think about, as you don’t want to find yourself unprepared in the middle nowhere. Of all the categories safety items are the first things we pack, you never know what may happen during your explorations. Clothing

  • Shirt
  • Sweater
  • Vest
  • Hat
  • Socks
  • Hiking shoes
  • Gloves

The day trip packing guide shows just a few articles of clothing that can be taken on a hike. The most important thing to remember is to bring lots of layers. This makes it easy to adjust to the changing weather. We also suggest picking pieces that are lightweight but still warm. Anything with down, or some synthetic fibres aren’t heavy but will still keep you warm. We suggest starting with a basic t-shirt and adding thin and thick long sleeve layers. Vests are also great for keeping your body warm and wearing underneath or overtop of your layers. Don’t forget to think about taking an extra layer on the bottom as well. Leggings or yoga pants are great to start with then building up with sweatpants for more warmth.

Smaller articles of clothing to think about are a hat, pair of gloves and good hiking socks. Finally, the most important thing of all is a strong pair of hiking boots or shoes. Look for something lightweight and comfortable, that has good grip. Also think about getting a boot, as it comes higher for more ankle support.

Gear

A day trip packing guide wouldn’t be complete without a backpack to hold all your things. We love this lightweight backpack from mountain warehouse, it is the perfect size for any day trip adventure. We never leave for an adventure without our trusty pocketknife. This is a given, best to be prepared with something small but extremely useful like a pocketknife. In addition, a flashlight is good to have on hand as well, just incase. Bug spray, sunscreen and any other products of the sort are useful and personal, so you make the best decision for yourself as to which should be packed. Finally, A dry bag is always good to have on hand to keep valuables from getting damaged in case you encounter some unexpected precipitation.

Safety

  • First Aid Kit
  • Bearspray
  • Whistle
  • Bell

Any packing guide should always start with safety items. A first aid kit is a necessity, bandaids, gauze, wet wipes, etc are important. You can build your own first aid kit, or buy a prepackaged one. The second most important thing would be bearspray. Never have we needed to use it but the comfort of knowing we have it with us, makes hiking anywhere more enjoyable. Lastly, some smaller products to think about bringing are a bell to hang from your backpack to make some noise, to keep the critters away. In addition, a whistle is sometimes handy as well, some backpacks have a built in one on the strap, which is convenient.

Consumables

  • Water
  • Lunch
  • Snacks

Never ever leave for any adventure, short or long, without taking water with you. Always remember to take a little more water than you think you will need, good to be over prepared in this aspect. Making sure your body has enough fuel to keep you going is important. So, packing snacks and even a light lunch is a good idea.
